THE CENTRAL MARKET SQUARE

To create the structure it was necessary to free a whole block the maze of narrow alleys in the area, very old but unhealthy, destroying an island of homes for each street (via dell'Ariento via Panicale, by Clare and Sant'Antonino), so that would open wide square used to house a new indoor market.

To meet the market structure was hired Giuseppe Mengoni (1870-1874), architect of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan which was inspired by Halles Paris. The result was remarkable, with the integration of more modern materials (iron, glass, cast iron) with the appearance of existing buildings.

Was built around a 10 arched loggia classics on each side, with slender columns of stone.
The inauguration took place in 1874 with 'International Exhibition of Agriculture.

The functionality of the building is especially evident inside, where the light filters through the high windows abundant upon which the roof and returns the result of a outdoor market.

Nothing went to waste here!!!!! Parts and more parts!!!!!! This is not for me.

Try some CAPO??? Pigs head cold cuts!!!! It wasn't bad, I tried a sandwich!

I found this seafood stand that cooked the food right from there own market(below).

11 euros for this plate and a glass of white wine, not bad being fresh from the market.
calamari(squid), baccala (cod), gamberi (shrimp)

I loved this place even though it was totally different the the Ballaro Market in Sicily.

I took the slow train to lucca. Its a long trip. First a 25 minute bus ride from my small village(Trevignano Romano) to a neighboring town called Bracciano. I then take a 56 minute train ride going south (the opposite way from my destination) to Ostienze station in Rome. My next train is a two hour ride from Rome to Pisa(we all know the leaning tower). My final train ride takes about 25 minutes Pisa to Lucca(tuscany region).
